Yes. If a psychological evaluation is on your bariatric surgery checklist, you can almost always complete it online by secure telehealth, with no drive across the city and no day off work. The evaluation is a structured conversation, and that conversation works just as well over video as it does in an office. This post covers how an online bariatric psychological evaluation actually works, whether it carries the same weight as an in-person one, and how to tell if telehealth is the right fit for you.

Can a Bariatric Psychological Evaluation Be Done Online?

In almost all cases, yes. A bariatric psychological evaluation is a clinical interview, not a physical exam or hands-on testing, so it moves cleanly to a secure video platform. At You Can Do It, PLLC, many patients complete theirs entirely by telehealth and never set foot in the office.

The online version gathers the same information, follows the same clinical standards, and ends in the same written report as an in-person appointment. The only thing that changes is where you sit. Instead of our waiting room, you are at your own kitchen table, which is often where people feel most like themselves.

Does a Telehealth Evaluation Count the Same as In-Person?

This is the worry I hear most often, and the answer is yes. The report that reaches your surgical team is the same document, prepared to the same standard, whether we met on video or across my desk. Your surgical program cannot tell from the report which format you chose, because clinically there is no difference.

Most bariatric programs and insurers have accepted telehealth evaluations since remote care became standard. One practical caution: a small number of programs still ask for the evaluation to be done in person, so it is worth a quick question to your surgical coordinator about whether yours has a format requirement before you book. If it does, we see patients in person at our Midtown Manhattan and NoMad offices as well, so you are covered either way.

How an Online Bariatric Evaluation Works, Step by Step

There is no complicated setup. Here is the whole process:

You book and get a secure link. No referral is needed. You receive a link to a private, HIPAA-compliant video platform.

You join from somewhere private. A quiet room where you can speak openly is all you need. The appointment runs about an hour.

You have the conversation. We talk through your history, your relationship with food, your support system, and how ready you feel for the changes ahead. It is a discussion, not a test.

You complete any brief questionnaires. When standardized measures are useful, you fill them out digitally, right from your device.

Your report goes to your surgical team. A written report is prepared and sent to your program, typically within 2 to 3 business days and often sooner, since these evaluations usually sit right before a surgery date.

Who Telehealth Works Well For, and When In-Person Is Better

Telehealth is a strong fit for most people, and especially for a few:

Anyone far from Manhattan. If getting to a Midtown office means a long trip or a day off, telehealth removes that barrier entirely. For many New Jersey patients, this is the whole reason the evaluation finally happens.

Busy or inflexible schedules. An hour from home or on a break is far easier to manage than a half-day round trip.

Anyone more comfortable at home. People often open up more easily in their own space, which makes the evaluation more useful, not less.

In-person is the better choice in a few situations: when your program specifically requires it, when you do not have a private and quiet space for a candid conversation, or when you simply prefer to meet face to face. Neither format is better clinically. It is about what fits your life and your program.

What You Need for Your Telehealth Appointment

To make the day go smoothly, have these ready:

A private, quiet space. Somewhere you can speak honestly without being overheard.

A device with a camera and stable internet. A phone, tablet, or computer all work.

Any paperwork from your program. Plus a list of your medications and your insurance details.

Yourself, as you are. There is nothing to rehearse. The honest version of your story is the one that lets me write a report that genuinely helps you.

A Note on Meeting Over Video

Early on, I wondered whether something would be lost over a screen. It has not been. I can read a person, hear what sits under their words, and build the same trust on video that I do in the room. If anything, people arrive a little less guarded when they are somewhere familiar.

What telehealth really changes is who gets to the evaluation at all. I have worked with people who put this step off for months because the trip felt impossible on top of everything else surgery already asks of them. Taking that barrier away does not lower the quality of the work. It just means the care reaches the person who needs it.
