Chronic Pain Management Psychological Evaluations in New York City

Living with chronic pain affects far more than the body. It shapes mood, relationships, daily functioning, and the ability to engage with treatment. A psychological evaluation is often a required or recommended step before certain chronic pain interventions — and at You Can Do It, PLLC, we provide that evaluation in a structured, respectful, and clinically thorough setting.

We offer virtual and in-person chronic pain management psychological evaluations in New York, with reports typically completed within 2–3 business days.

Our goal is to support your care team with accurate, timely documentation — and to support you with a process that takes the full picture seriously.

What Is a Chronic Pain Management Psychological Evaluation?

A chronic pain management psychological evaluation is a structured clinical assessment that examines the emotional, behavioral, and psychological factors that influence how an individual experiences pain and engages with treatment.

These evaluations are often required or recommended for individuals being considered for:

  • advanced pain management interventions such as spinal cord stimulator (SCS) implantation
  • higher-level medication protocols
  • implantable devices or surgical pain interventions
  • interdisciplinary chronic pain treatment programs

The evaluation is not designed to question whether your pain is real. Chronic pain is a complex medical condition, and the purpose of this assessment is to identify psychological factors that may affect treatment outcomes — both to support your care team’s decision-making and to help you get the most out of your treatment.

Who This Evaluation Is For

This evaluation is for adults in New York who are managing chronic pain conditions and have been referred for a psychological assessment, or whose care team has recommended one before moving forward with a procedure or protocol.

You may be referred by:

  • a pain management specialist
  • a neurologist
  • an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon
  • a physiatrist or physical medicine provider
  • a primary care physician coordinating your pain care

In some cases, individuals seek this evaluation independently as part of understanding their treatment options and emotional relationship with chronic pain.

If you are also being evaluated for a spinal cord stimulator specifically, you may want to review our Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) Psychological Evaluations page for details on that process.

What We Assess During the Evaluation

During your chronic pain management psychological evaluation, we examine the psychological and behavioral factors known to influence pain experience and treatment outcomes, including:

  • emotional history and current mood, including experiences with depression and anxiety
  • pain-related beliefs and attitudes
  • coping strategies and stress management approaches
  • functional impact of pain on daily life, relationships, and work
  • treatment history and prior interventions
  • expectations for the current treatment or procedure
  • motivation for and readiness to engage with recommended treatment

Evidence-based screening tools used during the evaluation may include the PHQ-9, GAD-7, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, and the MBMD (Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic), as clinically appropriate.

The evaluation is collaborative and structured — designed to understand your experience fully, not to find reasons to disqualify you from treatment.

What to Expect During and After Your Evaluation

During the Evaluation

The evaluation consists of a structured clinical interview with one of our licensed mental health professionals experienced in chronic pain assessment. We review your medical, emotional, and functional history, discuss your relationship with pain and treatment, and explore factors that may support or complicate your path forward.

The conversation is respectful, nonjudgmental, and designed to give you space to share your experience honestly.

After the Evaluation

Following the appointment, our clinician reviews all findings and prepares a comprehensive written report.

Reports are typically completed within 2–3 business days. Documentation is sent directly to your referring provider or pain program. Our team is familiar with the documentation requirements of interdisciplinary pain care programs and prepares reports accordingly.

If additional documentation or clarification is needed by your provider or insurance, we are happy to coordinate.

Some individuals also benefit from individual therapy alongside or following the evaluation, particularly when support is needed around coping, emotional regulation, or adjustment to chronic illness. Individual therapy is available at YCDI for those who want continued support.

Virtual and In-Person Evaluations

We offer both virtual and in-person chronic pain management psychological evaluations across New York.

Virtual evaluations are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform and are available to individuals throughout New York State, when appropriate for the referral context and clinical needs.

Appointments are typically 60–75 minutes and follow the same structured process regardless of format.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chronic Pain Management Psychological Evaluations in New York City

What is a chronic pain management psychological evaluation in New York City?

A chronic pain management psychological evaluation is a structured clinical assessment that examines the emotional, behavioral, and psychological factors involved in chronic pain. It is often required or recommended before advanced pain interventions such as spinal cord stimulator implantation or higher-level medication protocols. The evaluation examines mood, coping strategies, pain-related beliefs, treatment expectations, and overall readiness — and produces a written report shared with the referring provider or program.

Why do I need a psychological evaluation for chronic pain treatment?

Psychological factors significantly influence how individuals experience pain and how they respond to treatment. Research consistently shows that mood, coping style, and pain-related beliefs affect outcomes for advanced pain interventions. Most pain management programs and many insurance companies require a psychological evaluation before approving procedures like spinal cord stimulator implantation. The evaluation is not designed to question whether your pain is real — it is designed to support the most informed, coordinated care possible.

Is a psychological evaluation required before a spinal cord stimulator?

In most cases, yes. Spinal cord stimulator psychological evaluations are typically required by pain management providers and insurers before SCS implantation is approved. At YCDI, we provide both chronic pain management evaluations and SCS-specific psychological evaluations. If you are unsure which type of evaluation your provider is requesting, we are happy to help clarify before scheduling.

What is the difference between a chronic pain psychological evaluation and an SCS psychological evaluation?

A chronic pain management psychological evaluation is a broader assessment of the psychological and behavioral factors involved in chronic pain, often used for individuals being considered for a range of advanced pain interventions or higher-level protocols. An SCS psychological evaluation is a more specifically focused assessment for individuals being considered for spinal cord stimulator implantation. In practice, the two often overlap. If your provider has requested one or the other, we can help clarify what is needed before scheduling.

What happens during the evaluation?

The evaluation consists of a structured clinical interview with a licensed mental health professional experienced in chronic pain assessment. The clinician reviews your medical, emotional, and functional history, your relationship with pain, coping strategies, treatment history, and expectations for the procedure or protocol being considered. Standardized screening tools such as the PHQ-9, GAD-7, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, and MBMD may be used as clinically appropriate. The conversation is collaborative and respectful — the goal is to understand your experience fully.

Will the evaluation affect whether I can move forward with treatment?

The evaluation is not designed to automatically approve or deny treatment. Its purpose is to provide your care team with a thorough clinical picture of the psychological factors that may affect your outcomes — and to identify any areas where additional support might help you get the most out of your treatment. Your medical team uses the evaluation findings as one part of the broader clinical decision-making process.

How long does it take to receive the report?

Reports are typically completed within 2–3 business days following the evaluation. Documentation is sent directly to your referring provider or pain program. For individuals working within a tighter timeline, please mention this when scheduling and we will do our best to accommodate.

Can I do this evaluation virtually?

Yes. Chronic pain management psychological evaluations are available virtually through a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform for individuals throughout New York State, when appropriate for the referral context. Virtual evaluations follow the same structured clinical process as in-person appointments.

Does insurance cover a chronic pain psychological evaluation?

You Can Do It, PLLC currently accepts Cigna for chronic pain management psychological evaluations. Coverage and benefits vary by plan. Self-pay options are also available, and clients with other commercial insurance plans may be able to use out-of-network benefits with a superbill provided upon request. If you have questions about your coverage before scheduling, we are happy to help clarify.

Where are you located in New York City?

We have two New York City office locations — one in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central and one in NoMad. In-person evaluations are available at both locations. For individuals located elsewhere in New York State, virtual evaluations are available through our secure telehealth platform.

How long does the evaluation take?

A chronic pain management psychological evaluation at YCDI typically takes 60–75 minutes. Following the appointment, the written report is completed within 2–3 business days and sent directly to your referring provider or pain program.

What if my provider or insurance requires additional documentation?

We regularly coordinate with pain management programs and providers and can supply additional documentation, forms, or clarifications when needed to support the treatment approval process. Please let us know at the time of scheduling if your provider or program has specific requirements.
